Southview Seniors was formed in the early 80's by a group of Seniors who had purchased homes in the Southview Estate Community in Cameron, Ontario, in the City of Kawartha Lakes then known as Fenelon Township.
The Clubs first meeting place was in the Library in the Cameron Public School. The Membership grew and the seniors approached the president of the of the Southview Estates Community Association and their Board of Directors to obtain a parcel of land off the Community Parkland approximately 200x300 feet for which the New Horizons Club signed a 20 year lease at $1.00 (one dollar) for 20 years, with some provisions for the Southview Estates Community who would be allowed certain privileges, such as free meeting days, two dances a year free, and emergency meetings when necessary.
The new lease was signed again with the same conditions in June 2001.
The sod turning took place in June 1982 and the Clubhouse was built by volunteers from the growing membership and in Novermber 1982 a Corporation number was issued #525208.
At the peak the club boasted a membership of over 100 members, but with the passing of the years our membership has decreased as a younger ownership is taking place in the Southview Estate now and a lot of our Seniors have passed on or are in nursing homes, but we continue to search for New Members in the surrounding areas.
The hall is currently used by the Seniors for Card Nights and Christmas Dinner and is rented out for Birthdays, Wedding Showers, Baby Showers, Weddings and various other activities.
Our Club has opened the doors free of charge to the Canadian Cancer Society, Community Justice Circle (Young Offenders Program), as well as a Nursery School and Elections Canada.
We are now registered with the Lindsay Fire Department as an Evacuation Hall for the surrounding area re: Cameron Public School as well as the Cameron Community.
Our Membership has members from Lindsay, Cambray, Kirkfield, Kinmount, Fenelon Falls, Bobcaygeon, Beaverton and Dunsford as well as the Community of Cameron.
The goal of the Club is to provide a safe, clean hospitable environment for the Seniors and give them a feeling of belonging as well as a place where they can interact with each other.
We take great pride in our Seniors Club and the young people (our future seniors) of the Southview Community has always been a part of our activities and help us with various projects when called upon. We hope we are sending a message to the Community that all are welcome to our Club and it's endeavors.
Membership fees are $10.00 per year from June 1st to May 31st.
